Cosmetics and Beauty products

Cosmetics are products you apply to your body to clean it, make it more attractive, or change the way it looks. They include

Hair dyes
Makeup
Perfumes
Skin-care creams

Cosmetics that treat or prevent diseases are also drugs. Products such as dandruff shampoo, fluoride toothpaste, and antiperspirant deodorant are both cosmetics and drugs. A good way to tell if you're buying a cosmetic that is also a drug is to see if the first ingredient listed is an "active ingredient." The active ingredient is the chemical that makes the product effective. The manufacturer must have proof that it's safe for its intended use.
Cosmetics can cause allergic reactions. The first sign is often red and irritated skin. Fragrances and preservatives are the most common causes of skin problems.
To find out all the ingredients in a cosmetic you use, check the container. Manufacturers are required to list them. Labels such as "natural" and "hypoallergenic" have no official meaning. Companies can use them to mean whatever they want.
Cosmetics—makeup, creams, fragrances—have been around for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptian and Roman women famously caked on lead-based foundation. (Lead, a metal, can cause nerve, muscle and organ damage.) But surely lead-laden cosmetics have been phased out along with lead-lined water pipes, right? Not necessarily.

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees the multi-billion-dollar-a-year cosmetics industry but it lacks the power to approve products or ingredients before they hit store shelves, even though their contents have been shown to enter the body.

According to the FDA, a cosmetic is anything used for "cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering the appearance." An average U.S. consumer uses about 10 cosmetic products every day, including makeup, soap, shampoo, lotion, hair gel and cologne, says Lisa Archer, the national coordinator for The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), a nonprofit advocacy group based in San Francisco and financed in part by the Breast Cancer Fund, a nonprofit organization. As a result, she says, people are exposed to roughly 126 different chemicals daily, many of which haven't been thoroughly tested.

"We're operating in a vacuum in terms of safety," Archer says. "The FDA doesn't even define what 'safe' is, so it's totally up to the discretion of cosmetic companies."

The Best Perfumes for Teenagers

Light, simple, and floating on air…these are the words that describe the best perfumes for teenage girls. They don't have to smell like candy, but perfumes free of complexities (or at least mostly free of them) are perfect for this stage of life (because, really, there's plenty of time for complexity in everything later). Perfumes that can make you feel free at first whiff are beautiful for young girls.

Marc Jacobs Daisy: A light, innocent floral with a hint of strawberry and an adorable bottle with two large daisies on top, this scent is just complex enough to carry her through her 20s (and maybe even beyond) if she feels she's found her signature scent at such a young age.
Vera Wang Princess: This is a whimsical scent with notes of water lily, golden apricot, lady apple, florals, dark chocolate, amber, warm woods, and vanilla.
Justin Bieber Someday: Some teens and pre-teens will just want this because of the cute bottle and the boy behind it, but it actually smells good, too. Red berries, pear, and orange collide with jasmine and other florals before settling down into a light vanilla-musk.
Lady Gaga Fame: At first glance, this looks like it would be too dark for a teen, but it's surprisingly light. Teenage girls will also enjoy the fact that the liquid inside is black, but somehow sprays out clear. Notes include belladonna, incense, apricot, honey drops, orchid, and jasmine sambac, but it comes out as a fruity-floral for any age group.
Chloe: Light, happiness, and a little bit of innocent romance are summed up within the walls of this bottle. Notes include pink peony, freesia, lychee, magnolia, rose, cedarwood, amber, and honey. It's lovely and feminine, the perfect perfume for a teen girly-girl.
Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy: Yes, it's ubiquitous in middle school, high school, college, and even beyond, but there's a reason. It's a mixture of harmless florals and fruits wrapped in a cloud of not-too-sweet vanilla. It's mandarin, peach, berries, jasmine, orchid, gardenia, caramel, vanilla, and amber.
Yves Saint-Laurent Babydoll: Bright grapefruit combines in this Yves Saint-Laurent perfume with peach, rhubarb, freesia, rose, ginger, and cedarwood for a deliciously happy scent in a gorgeous pink faceted bottle. This one is tart, not sweet.
Guerlain L'Instant: This is a sweet blend of citrus, magnolia, honey, and amber. It's perfect for a teenage girl who's sophisticated for her age.
Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire: Yet another Guerlain for sophisticated young girls, this one smells like black tea, sweet cherries, and the tiniest hint of rose. It's not the typical "pink" scent and more mystery surrounds this one than the "pink" or "bubblegum" scents so popular with teens. If she wants to stand out, this one is something to consider.
